Extra! Extra! Read all about it. Newspaper Digitization Project Complete

Our historical newspaper, the San Anselmo Herald, has entered a new era and has been digitized through a San Anselmo Historical Commission/San Anselmo Public Library partnership with the Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research at UC Riverside and genealogy data provider Ancestry.com.

Ancestry.com is hosting the Herald at Newspapers.com for three years, after which the Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research will also host it at the California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC), which is publicly accessible. Access to the Herald will be free during the three-year period to those who come to the San Anselmo Library or Historical Museum to do their research.

The San Anselmo Herald (also called the Marin Herald or San Anselmo and Marin Herald in some years) was published almost continuously from 1912 to 1946. Small town papers like the Herald often detailed the lives of the local residents. They had room to tell about marriages and deaths, stories of businesses opening and closing, actions of the town council, real estate transactions and other interesting tidbits. The San Anselmo Herald is an invaluable resource for researching our town’s history and that other communities in Ross Valley.

We are most fortunate to have been included in this project as we would have never had the financial resources to undertake the scanning of the reels of microfilm and the digitization on our own.

The California Digital Newspaper Collection contains almost one million pages of California papers. The Marin Journal (1861-1922), Marin Tocsin (1861 -1918) and Sausalito News (1885-1957) are included in the collection.

Newspapers.com has over 100 million pages from 3,600 newspapers across the country including the San Rafael Independent Journal (1949-1977) and San Anselmo Herald. The full collection is available through a monthly or annual subscription to Newspapers.com.
