Garden Time – Vintage Photos of San Anselmo GardensGardentime2

Sunny San Anselmo is truly a special place to live. Historically, the climate attracted visitors and residents to the area. The town is sheltered from fog and chilly winds off the bay and ocean by the surrounding hills, and it is an ideal place to grow things and to enjoy the pleasures of outdoor life in a garden.

In 1912, a newspaper reporter wrote, “On a small scale, floriculture and horticulture are gradually coming to characterize this town. The soil is rich and with a little water yields opulently. Especially do fruit and flower and rare plants thrive and luxuriate with proper attention here.”

Early residents planted vegetable and flower gardens and orchards with almond, olive and fruit trees. There were nurseries, growing grounds and garden clubs.
